Upgrading unused bank account

I bank with HSBC and I currently have a £1000 student loan with them. When I entered second year I tried to extend it but they ran a credit check and refused me.
I'm wanting to do matched betting and use a seperate bank account and was thinking it would be easiest to use my existing Halifax account.
However, this account is old. I'm sure it's a savings account or something and it's sat empty for the past two years or so. I'm not even sure it has a proper debit card.
I was thinking of just upgrading this account, maybe to a student account. I was just wondering, are they likely to question why I'm suddenly showing interest in this unused account?
My HSBC account is my main account, so how should I react if questioned? Do I admit to having another account or what?
Also, could they tell that HSBC refused me a student loan last year? Thanks.

If the Halifax is a savings account you won't get a debit card on it.
It is unlikely that you will get a student account either if you are not a first year student or graduate.
Why not just open a basic account somewhere for your betting?0
