Noisy Wedding Parties in the Church next to my Flat!

  • My sympathies too OP - as much as I'm a fan of CRM's architecture I wouldn't expect to have booze-fuelled wedding bashes going on till all hours in a venue associated with a church. We used to live in a detached Victorian house that had one other similar house separating it from a former co-operative hall situated in a parade of small shops on one side of the rear garden. When we moved there the hall was very run-down and closed up, having been used for tea-dances in years gone by, then flea markets more recently.

A couple of years after we bought the house the hall became a live music/comedy club type venue with gigs etc going on till the early hours. We never received any notification of change of use/planning application etc. The fire escape led out onto a flat roof on the first floor at the back of the building and every time there was a band etc on this door was opened and the sound came blaring out and the staff came out for a fag. We had a young toddler at the time and how we kept him asleep those nights I don't know - the *booming* bass was an absolute pain in the neck!

I have to confess we never got round to complaining about it as we felt it would make no difference, but soon after we put the house up for sale and moved on. Since leaving the area the venue has gone from strength to strength and appears to be very popular with young bands and their fans, so I guess the other local residents either put up with the noise or else have grown used to it........

Thanks for all the advice. Luckily it has only happened a few times so far, I’m just hoping it won’t be every weekend.
When I spoke to the noise team they said just to call them every time it happened.

I bumped in to my down stairs neighbour last night and they agreed that it was unacceptable, so I have put a notice in the communal area, asking anyone who is bothered by it to call the out of hours hotline, whenever the noise starts.

I have also emailed the council asking if the church has an entertainment license and if so, where can I look at it, to check the Ts & Cs.

Stop! Think. Read the small print. Trust nothing and assume that it is your responsibility. That way it rarely goes wrong.

Yup, wedding "receptions". And just to clear it up, it's not really a "working" church, in terms of worship, weddings / funerals etc, it generally practices as a museum and is funded by a charity.

The local church hall next to my church had to install soundproofing after complaints from the neighbours and the council also installed a cut out device if the noise from the band/DJ was too loud.
One minute very loud music the next silence except the drums
The bands and DJ,s soon learned to reduce the volume or get cut off.
Hope you can get the same help from your council/EH

hmmm interesting, just had a reply back from the licensing enquiries department @ glasgow city council, informing me that the premises do not have an entertainment license........ im guessing one would be required for such events? (and, yes I have replied, asking this, but their responses aren't too timely!)

Church halls are exempt from the need to have an entertainment licence. Depends if you could argue that this is an actual church or not? Does worship take place there?

They may need an alcohol licence though. Antisocial behaviour tends to have an adverse effect on these...

Next time you get smokers, you could always "put the fire out" with a bucket of water from your window...
