hi

work told me friday that they are closing down, ive worked there for years so will get a reasonable payout

what i want to know is what can i do????

ive children and recieve widowed parents allowance of around £107 per week and fam allowance for 2 kids

now the tricky bit.... i will have over 40K savings (half is in an isa) after i get my redundo, i have been looking into getting a room built onto the house so the kids can have a seperate bedroom as currently they are in a tiny room in bunk beds....would this be a no no now? its something ive been considering for ages but put off as im out at work all day and theres no one to let builders in etc otherwise it would be finished now

also what if anything could i get...CB JSA? NI credit? will i still get CTC? i know about the 16k rule so wouldnt even try for IB JSA
school meals? prescriptions?
do i have to inform JS about an ISA im new to all this having been employed since school, i dont even know where my JS is now lol...not looking forward to the grilling when i have to go!...pick on the genuine peeps and give the ale swigging wasters an easy time

im more than happy to use some of may savings to live off i just would like to have the room built

i dont intend to be out of work too long!!! ive already started applying

done a few sums and without jsa ill get around £200 a week so its doable

already done the disney thing thankyou (took the kids mum n kids as a last holiday before she died...if thats ok by you or maybe we should have had a long weekend in mablethorpe)

im looking for constructive advise here in as is there a problem going ahead with building work when claiming none means tested benefits?
my opening post does say im more than prepared to live off my savings...so why the dig???

anyway why is it a problem to spend my family money on my family? i dont intend to have a holiday i just want to give the children a little extra space..i have 2 kids (1 is a teenager) in a room only big enough for a bunk bed a small wardrobe and a small chest of drawers, my room isnt any larger
  • Great idea! As you are out of work why not have a holiday to the Bahamas and take the kids to Disney.

Reality check time. More people are coming onto the dole que everyday and my be younger and better qulified. You may find it hard to get another job. You are in a better position than most as you have a good amount of savings. Get to the job centre they will give you the full story.

blimey a bit harsh, I got the impression that the OP was trying to do the "right thing", he is just asking what that is ? I don't think anyone would begrudge a teenager a small bedroom of their own if the parent can actually afford to have one built.

Going from husband and wife,2 children and a full time job to an unemployed widower with 2 children is a considerable change, no wonder OP needs some advice.

OP - good luck in getting this sorted, and for finding yourself a new job in due course.

    Miss H

I have a feeling that Widowed Parent allowance is, what they call, an overlapping benefit and you can't claim this and contribution based JSA. Hope I'm wrong! However, you do need to apply for JSA because even if you aren't entitled to it then you could still sign on and get your NI credits and maybe some help with finding another job.

You must notify Tax Credits about your change of circumstances. You will still be able to get Child Tax credit as the capital 'rules' are different for this benefit. (They only take into account interest over £300 on capital.) But I would let them know about your savings.

You will have to declare all your capital when you apply for JSA as they will also assess you for income based JSA if you are not entitled to the contribution based. This includes the ISA. (better find the paperwork.:))

I think the poster that you are cross with was trying, in a not very nice way, to say that you will be expected to live off your savings until you find another job.

If you have the work done on your house then it could be seen as deprivation of capital (i.e. done to claim benefits)

You might see the redundancy money as a blessing in disguise to spend on something that you really want to do but the 'powers that be' see it as money to see you through your 'jobless' period.

So, fingers crossed that you get another job soon then you won't have to worry about being on benefits and can get on with your extension - good luck with it all.
  • thanks to all the nice people on here, it will be a big change as ive been at the same job over 25 years so never known unemployment

nothing has happend at work yet so im still in a job with no redundancy notice as yet, we were in a meeting last week where the md told us what is happening

everyone here is applying like crazy for job (me too) im not fussy and will do anything to ensure my kids have a decent life, ill even clean loos if i need to, ive spent all my spare time online applying for jobs
    fingers crossed

Good luck with the job, hope you get it. I kind of know what you are going through. I was made redundant 2 weeks ago. Today I had my 1st appointment at the jobcentre, tomorrow I sign on for the 1st time after 36 years of working. I feel totally depressed. Spoken to like a child in a patronising way, telling me that I have to have 3 career choices. I explained that I am highly qualified and experienced in what I do, and that given this is my 1st week I would rather hold out for a similar job. But no, these are the rules.....
All of this crap for £71pw for only 6 months, then nothing because I was sensible and saved.
I am tempted to tell them to shove it.
Hope your experience with them is better than mine
  • Good luck Bob60

not had the joys of the job centre yet as still working (last few weeks..lease on company premises finishes in november so a little time yet)
no doubt ill be treat like a child i think they know they can bully people like us who do not know how to navigate the system.

    all the best!
