HMRC took too much money - Advice please

Hi

I had a over-payment of £170 odd to be repaid to HMRC which I rang up on Friday to pay. All seemed fine but when I've checked my bank this morning - I've had 2 payments for the same amount taken out of my bank.

I have rang HMRC and got through to head office who said she would sort it out for me and they would refund the extra payment.

However all though i'm fine now, when my bills start coming out from the 17th, I will go overdrawn if the money is not back and i don't have an overdraft on my account.

No one can lend me the money to stay in credit as no one has the money left (my parents are struggling themselves).

Does anyone know how long it will take for a refund to be processed?

Please help

  • Ring your bank and explain the situation to them. That is the first thing you should do. The bank should in this instance put a note on your account records to state that HMRC took 2 payments instead of one and thus any charges due will be down to HMRC to pay - these can be claimed for if it happens. Been there and done that many a time over the years. Technically a credit being returned should take no longer than 6 days, but it should be sooner. Do that first. Then keep an eye out on your account - preferably on line if you can.

HMRC should sort this out immediately and I mean NOW! I used to work for them and we once had an embarrassing situation where a number of people had their tax payments taken out twice. As soon as the first person rang up to complain we were onto the case and every single person had the money refunded as soon as they telephoned in. There is no excuse for delay. Our story made the national news and we couldn't afford to fob people off. Ring up again and insist that the payment is made straight away.
    Don't mess with pensioners.
