Washing Machine Advice

Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong forum i considered it the most appropriate.

I in the process of buying my first house and need a washing machine as a priority.

Having never brought one before i'd appreciate some advice, dont want to spend silly amounts >500, but i want something that has a greater chance of standing the test of time.

I hear Bosch make good reliable machines for around £400-£500, can others add to my options through their experiences with other brands, please?

thanks,

Dan

Bosch is a Which best 'buy' brand without paying a fortune. Mine has lasted 12 years and still going strong (hope I'm not going to regret that comment) with only a pump and brush replacement after about 10 years.

I would recommend the LG ones. Very quite and the 30 degree 30 min wash is quite amazing at how clean the clothes come out.

+1 - ours is brilliant, and you get the nice 10 year warranty on the Direct Drive motor

Don't buy one with built in dryer facility. The heat from the dryer slowly cooks the printed circuit boards making them brittle and they then fail because of the vibrations from the spin cycles.

Having spent £400-£500 on washing machines of reputable make which failed within just a few years, we bought a £200 Zanussi 7 years ago which has never had an engineer near it.

Don't be fooled by all the multitude of washing options on the expensive ones, when it comes down to it, you will only use two or three of them - and they are the ones that the cheaper machines offer anyway.

Keep and eye out for Siemens or Bosch wth the 5 years parts AND labour warranties that are sometime available as special offers. We paid £450 for an end of range Siemens a couple of years ago and its been great as has most of our Siemens stuff so far and it gets fairly heavy family use

Try your local independent white goods shops and see if they will do price matching as ours does without even asking
  • Samsung doing 5yr parts and labour warranty at the moment. Im just about to buy one!

My motor has just gone due to "wear". 2.5 years old and used for 3-4 loads a week tops. £700 machine. 6 week repair period.

Had to have PCB replaced before it was a year old too.

Not impressed. Won't be buying another.

Just bought this for the MIL:-

    http://www.johnlewis.com/231653330/Product.aspx

We have an LG F1447TD5 which appears to be discontinued now. MIL was told by her repairman that it had to be a Bosch (I have long since given up trying to convince her otherwise and in this instance wouldn't have put up much of an argument anyway).

Her criteria was that it had to see her out :)
