As Lum said... Someone came on here recently pushing it a a huge cost saving thing to do for young drivers.

I did quotes and couldnt find ANY companies cheaper with the pass plus.

Some of the companies that wouldnt quote did with it but they were costly anyway.

As everyone is different and insurance a mystery do the quotes for yourself.

uyeah pass plus are a false economy, those that accept it for discounts are too exepnsive anyway and those that are the cheapest on comparison engines don't accept it.

From a logical point of view. It doesn't make a bloody bit of difference, 3 or 4 months on the road and you become a competant road user, not like the first few days driving when you're stalling the car everywhere, (at least that's what happened to me).

Save the money for petrol, that should give you 3 full tanks of petrol. that should give you plenty of experience on the road.

Thanks for all the responses. After doing a bit of research and comparing prices it looks like pass plus doesn't offer much discount to me.
One more thing, can you have insurance, do pass plus and then claim a discount or do you have to have done the course first before getting a years insurance?
    Thanks again :)

If you do the course then your current insurer in theory may offer a discount, it will probably be a £25 discount but they charge a £25 admin fee to update your details.

Basically because of the need to accrue NCB, especially at a young age, insurers know you aren't really in a position to cancel and go elsewhere so don't expect any discounts they may offer to a new customer to be applied retrospectively. They know you are stuck with them regardless so set their prices accordingly.

I wouldn't expect much financial benefit from Pass Plus. Even IAM and ROSPA is only likely to knock £20-ish off your policy.

What will save you money is the fact you'll be a lot less likely to crash and lose your no claims bonus and claim free history.

I've done Pass Plus, IAM and ROSPA. Personally I'd say Pass Plus is a waste of money...I'd advise you to do some 'post pass' driving with an experienced friend or family member for you're first few motorway drives, night drives etc.

Get a few months driving experience under your belt and then go for IAM or ROSPA. The biggest difference is that IAM is a 'pass for life' where ROSPA insist that you re-qualify every 3 years. An IAM pass is similar to a ROSPA Silver. Either award will make you a better driver.
  • i did a pass plus years ago when it was cheaper i paid £80.

it brought my quotes down to a 30% reduction in premium, but once its used its used and the next year the throw the 30% back on you anyway, even with NCB. so whilst you could but your car based on your pass plus and just afford it odds on you wont afford the next premium and have to lay up your car if you cant find it cheaper else where.

i would take the rospa course, as this seems to be the one that is most (with others) respected in the insurers curcle of approved courses.

these days you pay £185 for pass plus to have 50 60 pounds knocked off so seems a bit silly to pay that much for a certificate that will only grant the least discount with main stream insurers.

some dont even recognise the pass plus scheme.

even though you have to renew you certificate with rospa, you get to have training day every 3 years to keep upto date with the latest legislations and law and freshen up with your skills, and be rewarded with a discount every year you hold that certificate.
