car ins cancelled no proof of NCD help!

Hi,
wonder if any MSE-ers have any advice for me please? My partner has over 9 years no claims, but when he recently bought a 2nd hand car we couldnt find proof of his ncd. He'd had a van but it broke down so we scrapped it, but as there was only a few weeks left on the policy we didnt cancel it as it would have cost more! so we sent his van renewal quote with the ncd on it to the ins company that we took out the policy with for the car and they declined it due to it being on another vehicle and still running (and a van i think). its taken us a while to get the proof of ncd with the car he had prior to the van as it was nearly 2 years ago, but they wont accept it and have cancelled the policy. its our fault its taken so long, we both work long hours and dont have jobs where we can sit checking our emails on an hourly basis so we didnt realise until it was too late.
the ins company suggested we apply online again - but they have declined our quote request!! and when ive gone onto the comparison sites, the policies are coming up at 3 times what we previously got as i obviously have to check the ''had a previous policy cancelled?'' box!
help!! is there any way round this or do we put it down to experience and have to pay mega-£££ forever?
thanks for any advice

Did he use the insurance for the van? If he transferred it to a trade policy it seems they wont allow it to transfer it back.

Mate got caught with that one.

A cancelled policy does have to be disclosed for ever but see if a local broker (not swinton) can help get a cheaper deal
