Missing megabytes

I have two ext HDDs on my desktop. One of them has started "losing" storage space - so to speak !

If the disk has, say, 331GB of data on it, it should show 600GB as being free - it is a 1TB disk.
On two occasions, the space "occupied" and the free space do not add up to 931GB - the difference being several hundred GB.
If I delete all files and folders on the disk, it then visually shows as "empty" but only reports as having, say, 700GB free.
If I then format the disk - it shows as having 931GB on it again. If I reload my data, the space showing as occupied and what is reported as free add up to 931 again.............

Has anyone else come across this sort of thing??

TIA.

    1) Have you got hidden files/folders turned on?
    2) How are you deleting it?
    3) What is the drive formatted as?
    4) What version of (I'm guessing) windows are you on?
  • 1. Yes
    2. Right click - delete
    3. NTFS, No sub partitions. One partition of 913.51GB. "Healthy"

If you delete data, you need to empty the recycle bin with the drive connected. If you don't, deleted data sits in a hidden recycler on the drive, and the space doesn't clear.

The file system takes a certain amount of space up. Think of it like a storeroom, yes, it's got the capacity from wall to wall and floor to ceiling, but you lose a certain amount of space putting shelves in to put stuff on.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Use a program like TreeSize Free in Administrator mode to see what's taking up the space. You may have restore points in System Volume Information as well as Stuff in the recycle bin $RECYCLE.BIN.
