Russel have you any electrical items near the master socket? Things like electrical current can cause noise to appear on a line. Have you tried new adsl filters?

Also what are BT testing? Is it for calls or for broadband speed?

If its calls then if you can recieve & dial out then they'll say theres no BT problem (on the voice side)

If its the broadband then what you need to ask the advisor at BT is to run a Woosh check to see if theres a fault & if so to report it as a slow sync speed.
  • this all sounds really familiar!

I have recently had the same problem, and it was intermittent over quite a long period of time, whereby our phone would simply go dead.

We used to be with another phone provider and it was their lack of service that prompted me to go back to BT.

When the problem started again after our switch back to BT I rang them and went through all that you have gone through. They tested the line remotely and told me it was faulty equipment in the line. So I pulled everything out and phoned them back again - at which point I was told the same "faulty equipment plugged in" "That's funny" I said "There's nothing plugged in!".

So they agreed to send out an engineer and I was rally worried that I would end up being billed, but as it happened the engineer found 2 faults in the exchange before he even got to the house!

But - a new problem now exists - when we answer our phone, the dial tone continues in the background of the call! Great! We have tried putting a different phone in the socket - but still no good. Tried unplugging broadband in case of a fault there - but no - that doesn't work!

I am personally tempted to just get rid of the phone! I much prefer emails! lol!
  • They checked my line for phone fault also broadband fault but they say its ok.
They told me to check cables use the main socket thats under the plate check filters bought new filters still the same even started my computer back to the manufactures original state thinking i might have add ware r virus.

    Still the same anyway

Well if they've ran their checks and it comes back as the service is fine there isnt a lot they can do. As someone who worked on broadband faults for BT Wholesale i can say that the tests they perform are very good at finding where the fault lies.

Do the spyware check and see if that does any improvement :)
  • come across this every day.. why don't more just contact their local independent telephone engineer. Standard BT paractice off hands reports
often as not with no fault found or user fault- if you insist on BT engineer to face stiff potential charges. But if your own engineer proves a BT side fault you can put in his engineer report try for BT credit if they said it was your problem; if it did prove your problem its sorted for fraction of BT standard fees. Seems to work fine for Chester North Wales users anyway with inphone co uk or ref to good peers elswhere

  • The problem continues to crop up every day for many subscribers. Strange but true, when a boiler fault pops up
so many think of their local plumber rather than British Gas
as the simpler less expensive option-
but so few think of their local telephone engineer for a
comms fault rather than British Telecom- but the difference
is even greater (often costs even less than the plumber!)
--So rather helpful and relevent advice for many,
the easiest least cost answer where self help repairs
    not always feasible.

If you have taken the front plate off the BT box and pluged the phone into the socket inside and it makes a noise it's a BT problem as you are connecting directly to the incoming line.

As you are in a flat are you sure you are the only person on that line?

    Just making sure by asking.

This isn’t strictly true the fault could be on the phone but if you know the phone is ok then it looks like the fault is on the line.
