New home and contents insurance

I'm about to change my home and contents insurance. I'm currently being charged an outrageous £70 per month.
Can I just go ahead and get a new deal and then cancel my old deal after the fact. I really can't be bothered going through the ordeal of being put through to their detentions department etc.

That's the trouble with Guantanemo Bay Insurance plc.
Seriously, are you coming to the end of the policy year? If so, go ahead and set up a new policy for the end date. You should call the existin insurer to make sure they don't auto-renew. They might try to price-match for you too.
If you're in the middle of the policy year, cancelling will probably be more expensive than you think; it won't be a case of:
7 months into the policy = 7/12 of total cost.0
