This blade runner-esque future of US student debt seems pretty foreign today

however it's probably only about 10 years until the debt sizes are the same here as UK universities will have no choice but gradually charge increasing fees.

The UK student loan system is very different from the US one. If the UK government doesn't provide the UK student with a job the loans get written off in 25/30 years time and the future tax payer will pick up the cost. Potentially this could create massive problems for future tax payers but not for the individual student.
