Do credit cards have a minimum monthly purchase?

I recently got a second credit card, but until the credit limit increases I want to keep my original card.

This month is a cheap month (yay!), but do I have to spend on my original credit card? Do I get charged if I don't spend?

Comments

  • Most cards won't charge - there isn't a minimum spend but if there is a period of prolonged inactivity the credit card provider may close the account.

Some cards backed by Santander have a £10 'dormancy fee' if you don't use the card for 6 months. Some others have a £20 'dormancy fee' if you didn't make any chargeable transaction in the last 12 months.

Both types will write to you to let you know they are charging the fee. You can close the account (or make a purchase) before the fee is applied.

Other cards will reduce your limit or close your account if you've not made any chargeable transaction in a 6 or 12 month period.

So as long you don't ignore your post, you'll not get charged regardless.
