Help please....can I take additional card holder to court?

He probably (if advised) not accept liability - he could just refer to the payments as an informal arrangement but the liability for the goods remain with the principle card holder - he may also indicate that the op received benefit from the goods purchased via the card.
Yes judges do try to be fair but even in small claims courts they still have to follow established legal principles and in the op's case the text message is a vague agreement which does not take into consideration of other aspects associated with the relationship - who paid the mortgage/rent? Were living expenses equally split between the two parties? Also by reading the text the 3k would only be paid when the house is sold. House is not for sale or sold so technically he is not in breach of an 'agreement' unless the text message also indicated a time frame for the money to be paid.
The law can be very complex and whilst you can dispense of the services of a solicitor I personally would seek their advice.0
