Thanks to all. I am now well and truly WEP'ed or is it WPA'ed :-)

However.....I have noticed one thing though. When all my computers are switched off the lights on the cable modem and the router sometimes flash on and off light mad!! I have seen this happening when I am online when I am downloadeding a large file or watching streaming video. Is someone therefore using my connection?

if it is the wireless light, then possibly, but unlikely if you have just encrypted it. Most routers have an attached devices screen in the management webpage to check.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

This was happening prior to the encryption being applied. I'll watch out for it happening post encryption.

    Thanks

i have connected my kids laptops to our wireless and quite regularly i check to see which devices are attached(as it seemed someone was attached to us last week,..... sorted it out though)) but why is it that when i know my kids are online (sitting near them) it doesn't always show up that they are attached devices even after i refresh it

Don't know, which router?.. but if it is encrypted then other people wont be able to attach at all.

Thanks for all your quick responses, I'm reassured now. With respect to WPA or WEP encryption I was told tat I don't really need to have that on my Apple iMac G5 as the operating system prevents any hackers getting in (someone at Apple told me that) however my PC (XP) and Laptop(Vista) clearly need encryption so thanks for the links.

and yet again this is the danger of the 'apples don't get hacked/get virus's' falsehoods that go arround.
