Can you get rid of offensive ads on ebay?

Hi, I understand that ebay tailor the banner ads down the side of the screen to what they think you are interested in (something to do with cookies? - not very technical, lol).

Trouble is, my wife looks at a lot of animal stuff - horse and dog equipment, etc, and they (ebay) have taken to putting really upsetting images in ads for animal charities. Things like bears with hooks through their mouths and comments about how they are about to be ripped apart by dogs for bear baiting - that sort of thing. My wife is quite a sensitive soul and finds these really upsetting when she is just trying to browse ebay.

Is there anything that can be done to get rid of them? She has contacted ebay CS, but had no reply. If she disables cookies (don't even know what that is, but have heard it mentioned) then won't that stop her allowing the computer to remember her passwordfs etc etc?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Olias

I think sometimes the info comes from you service provider tracking your surfing.

Not sure if you can opt out.
  • If you use Firefox, install the AdBlockPlus add-on and it'll do away with the adverts altogether (and not just from eBay; it makes the whole internet a much more pleasurable experience).

If you use Internet Explorer, then there are other adblockers available, but think about changing browser to a better one!

    AdBlockPlus and NoScript.

With these 2 installed you dont get many adverts at all. Any that you do will
    be easy to remove.

I use a forum that tried blocking users with adblockplus installed. They get revenue from the adverts.
Didnt work too well though. Blocked people who paid membership not to see them and didnt block the ones it should have.

Trick was to allow the test frame but block all others :)

Hope I'm not stealing anyone's thunder but my thoughts were Adblock too...

    1 - Open Firefox
2 - TOOLS menu, select ADD-ONS and when presented with the add-ons screen, click search tab.
3 - Search for "ADBLOCK PLUS"
4 - Should be at top of search results as Adblock Plus 2.1.2
5 - Click Install (on the right).
    6 - Browse ad free.

I've used Adblock in FF, and my perception was that it slowed things down a bit.
It also made some pages look a bit sparse (eg. freegle) because all of their border junk was empty.
But perhaps I'll give it another go.

    Another vote for Adblock+

I recently had to use a friends PC and couldn't get over the amount of unnecessary, distracting rubbish on screen.

Some of the ads even had sound, one was a soap powder commercial!! When did that happen?

  • +1 for Adblock Plus, you will need to add a filter subscription, I use EasyList.

hehehe yeah I found this when using other people's computers and thinking "when did these adverts get so annoying?" then remembering that I've used Adblock for years, and the main reason was when Digital Spy website had an advert infection that caused an infection on my PC and I thought 'never again!'
