In July 2011, my husband and I stayed on a campsite for a week. At the time I booked, in March 2011, we thought my brother was to accompany us, so I booked two pitches and paid in full.
My brother was unable to come but we had a week in Dartmoor. The campsite was never more than maybe half full.
When I asked about a refund for the unused pitch, I was informed it was their policy to keep monies for a year, in the hope we would return. I don't know if this is legal but thought, okay ...
I have contacted them several times now and they say the money is still there for when we return but refuse to repay it.
Can anyone offer any advice please? It was booked via email using a debit card, all messages have also been through email.

By offering you a free stay, they are going way beyond what they have to do. It's not their fault that your brother couldn't go, and they therefore couldn't sell that pitch to anyone else. The fact that it wasn't full is irrelevant. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

What month did you cancel it?0

I agree - to stay and then demand a refund for an unused pitch when it's no fault of the site is a bit much.
I'd have told them where to go, the site provided the service in good faith. They don't need to do anything, push for more and they might go back on their offer.0 -
Actually the pitches were booked and paid for on 23 June. The campsite were informed on 27th June that my brother was unable to accompany us. We went 17 July, to attend the burial of my parents ashes.
but thank you, I'll let the campsite keep my money. £84. For doing nothing. Even if they deducted 'admin fees', keeping it all is daylight robbery.0 -
ask your brother to pay you what you have lost.0

So was it March 2011 or June 2011 that you booked and paid for the pitches?
Either you or your brother could have taken them up on their offer of using the payment at another date - but chose not to.0 -
Fair-dos to the OP for coming back - even after 5 months.

Was the pitch used by any other customers other than your own party?0
