Car hire insurance help needed please

We are hiring a car for 3 days in the UK and want to take out the separate insurance that will protect us from paying out the extortionate £1,000-£1,500 excess should we have a prang.
I thought it was called damage waiver insurance and I know that some car rental companies offer this as standard or an extra (i.e. Avis and Alamo) but it doesn't seem to be what we need as it often doesn't cover more standard things such as tyres, windscreen etc.
I am confused now. We hired a car last year and took out a separate insurance and I'm wondering now if we took out the right one!
Can someone help please?
