I understand that if you spend alot on the Amex platinum card, the fee would be waved. Any ideas on what the spend is?

A few years ago they waived it for me when I threatened to cancel it.
The next year they wouldn't do it again but said they'd offer me "free gold for life".
The following year they applied the fee. I complained and they denied that they would ever make such an offer as "free for life". No problem - they cancelled the fee, and the account was closed.
I recall you used to be able to pay the annual fee with membership rewards points.0 -
Saying you'll leave is generally the way to do it but they as often offer MRs to keep you rather than waiving or cutting the fee0
