Slow system startup

Hi all

My computer seems to be taking too long to startup from power-on. I'm running XP Home SP2 and 768MB RAM. I've run Hijackthis and got the following :-

I run Spybot, Adaware SE, cleanup and defrag regularly.

Any help would be appreciated.

you can turn off all unwanted programs like lexmark by going to
start
run
type in
msconfig
go to the
start-up tab
and un-check anything that you dont need to start up
when your pc does,
then click apply and ok
re-start your pc and see how long it takes to start up now,
you dont need all your programs to start up when windows does,
so you can turn off some or not even all of them
I only have my anti-virus
starting up,
or you can go to this website and download for free this tool,
http://www.windowsstartup.com/
which does the same job,

StartupCPL from Webattack.com and other similar utilities give you a bit more info on the services/progs/processes being launched at startup.

I'd almost certainly get rid of all the Adobe and Nero stuff for starters.

Check whether you feel the Macromedia stuff is any use too. What do you need that launching at startup for?

Thanks to OP and other posters as this information is useful to me too. I have now ticked off a few programs that I never use and certainly don't wish to clog up my startup routine.

OK - sorry to sound thick, but I really don't know how to disable these things. In the startup tab on MSCONFIG I have the following :-
vttimer
carpserv
lxbkbmgr
taskswitch
Nerocheck
zlclient
qttask
avgcc
ctfmon
dslmon
powerreg scheduler v3


I know what some of these are (the highlighted ones), but could do with a list of what I can switch off on startup.
As for the Lexmark stuff, I could do with that as it makes life easier to user the system tray icon rather than the buttons on the printer.

I can also give a list from the Services tab if it helps, but that is quite a list.

Just to double check but are you saying your system takes a while to start up or it starts up ok but takes a while before its usable i.e. everything runs slow for a while?
