Problems with shared dvd drive

I have only just discovered the ability to have a home network.
I think I've successfully added pc and laptop ( both win 7) and printer to a home network.

I also gather you can share a dvd drive so am playing around trying to sort that out.

All looked good in so much as I can see the pc dvd drive on the laptop. I have inserted a music cd into pc and I can see the tracks on both machines.

However when I try to listen to a track on the laptop and press play, it doesn't work. No problems via the pc which has the drive.
What could have gone wrong?

    Still no joy.
But I've found an old DVD with microsoft office files on it and it can read that ok and open on the other machine.

Must be an issue with music files/ media player?

Also I don't understand how this works exactly. I gather the network is enabled thanks to my wireless modem router so every time I access a simple file from 'the other machine' will that count towards my internet usage?

Is the sound enabled on the laptop and not muted.
Sharing via the router does not go anywhere the internet so you will not use any of your limit.

Does the CD spin when you click play?
How do I add a signature?

No the disk doesn't even spin.
I googled and wondered if it was something to do with windows media player.
Someone had success with a different media player.

But for me, it doesn't work with windows media player or itunes.
Funnily enough, I tried to access the pc's music ( not on disk but the library) and couldn't access that either.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world. I was just experimenting as the laptop is on its last legs and might consider one without a drive now that I know it is possible to share drives. It would probably only be used for installation disks.

Thanks to the poster for clarifying the internet usage aspect..... and yes sound is enabled. Will play what's already in the laptop music library.
