New AA renewal scam

The AA are sending out letters headed "Why rely on others when you can have your own Breakdown Cover". They inform you that the AA membership that you once had (e.g. supplied by car dealer/manufacturer) has expired.

What they don't tell you is that this cover may have expired many years ago. So if you have for example purchased a new car which came with breakdown cover, you may think that this is the cover that has expired and could end up paying them to cover you when you are still covered under the policy supplied by the dealer/manufacturer.

I have had two of these letters and I phoned the AA after the first one. Despite their letter, they said that they did not know what breakdown cover had expired nor when it expired.

I have since discovered from my own records that my manufacturer's AA cover ended in 2007 and that I took out alternate cover when this happened. I could easily have fallen into their trap as I bought a new Skoda 18 months ago with cover supplied through VW/RAC.

Don't see a problem. Its up to individuals to keep track of what they have and when it runs out.

Getting sick of people seeming to think that it should be everyone elses job to and that the government should legislate to make it everyone elses problem other than the individual.

I am not suggesting legislation, what I am objecting to is that a well respected organization (the AA) is trying to get new business by implying that your breakdown cover has recently come to an end.

They're not implying it has recently come to an end, they are stating that it has. I fail to see how any of that is false.

If you can't be bothered to keep track of your own affairs, that is your problem. I wish I had your level of income - its obviously quite substantial if you've been paying for alternative cover and couldn't even remember you had.

Personal Responsibility - you might want to start practising it.

    1. I agree that they are stating that cover has come to an end. but unless you consider several years ago to be recently in relation to annual cover, then they ARE IMPLYING that it ended recently!
    2. Nowhere did I state (or imply) that I had been paying for concurrently running cover, I wasn't.

Given the above you should read things more carefully before commenting on them.

My sole purpose in making my original post was to caution people that this was happening.

I may have misunderstood the purpose of these forums, which I thought were (a) to pass on information which may save people money, (b) to ask for advice relating to financial matters and (c) to give considered advice to those who ask for it.
In brief, they are to help people.

Your posts show that you are more interested in expressing your opinions than helping and that you fail to understand what you read. As the saying goes, 'If you can't help, get out of the kitchen'.

This is an addendum to my previous reply.

Your quote above proves that I was right in making my posts in that you believed that they were STATING that cover recently came to an end. This is the very misunderstanding that I was trying to warn people of.

Regardless of when it came to an end, the simple fact is that the person receiving the letter hasn't got breakdown cover through the AA so they're informing them of this fact and offering the option to purchase it.

I can't work out why you keep banging on about the fact your cover ended ages ago when it is completely and utterly irrelevant.

Now if you had an existing AA policy and they were trying to get you to buy one today whilst mid-term then that is a different issue but they're not

The title of your original post was "New AA renewal scam". It isn't a scam at all.
