It doesn't say how you will be paid, but when I went to the interview yesterday the interviewer said that they pay cash as that's how people prefer it to be paid rather than through the banks and that they take away the tax so it's not as if they're fiddling.

Being paid in cash and being paid cash in hand are totally different things!

There are no shortages of alleged instances where employers have taken the tax and allegedly pocketed it.

Ok thank you for that, I've edited it out of the OP. I've only had 1 job and it was paid through the bank so I've never heard of being paid cash which is entirely legitimate.

But this can happen just as much if staff are paid by cheque of DD.

Being paid cash in hand is when it's paid on the side, so it's not being declared and thus no taxes will be deducted. I think that's right anyway

    I am self employed.

Some people pay me in cash but as a Sole Trader I am responsible for declaring all my income and paying tax on it through a tax return.

If they pay me in cash and I pocket the money I am guilty of tax evasion.

How on earth can you be self employed yet someone (after all it cannot be an employer!) kindly deducts from your pay and pays your tax for you.

    This stinks.
I appreciate you are keen to work but please walk, some people may make money and a decent living from this but it won't be you. Walk.
  • And a job being on direct.gov is no indicator of its legitimacy. I once advertised on there myself - yes, I have actually hired lots of people, and they barely do any checks.

if you dont mind the idea of doing a work trial then establish that it is being done through the jobcentre as i believe all work trials are done that way. if it isnt i would be suspitious of them. if you dont like the idea of a work trial and think its a p*** take then just dont bother. i wouldnt even do the nice thing of telling the employer beforehand. if any paper work or agreement had been made with the jobcentre then you would have to inform them. the jobcentre cant force people to do work trials.
  • My Ex Boyfriend was almost scammed via a job advertised on Direct Gov. Google Mark Shortland Nationwide Chauffeurs. There is also a thread about it on here.
