Windows Mail keeps timing out

I'm having problems with my emails at the moment often it times out when receiving mail, I thought this was a problem on my old laptop, but have now moved everything to my new laptop (using Windows Mail Live) I am still getting the time out problem. We did have a problem with internet a couple of weeks ago where the whole village was out (BT Infinity) just before we went on holiday. The connection is still not as fast as it should be, could this be the reason and how do I get round this? At the moment I just have to keep hitting Send and Receive until all the mail come through, but this is time consuming and often means I get the same emails twice.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
