Hi guys,
I'm considering buying ipad 3. I was hoping it would last for the duration of my course and I predominately need it for reading journal articles, lit searches, storing lecture presentations and accessing email etc. Am I better off buying a cheaper model or going all out for an ipad 3 please?

Depends what your budget is?
Buying an ipad 3 would give you more longevity but you could get an ipad 2 wifi 16gb (refurb @ online Apple Store) for £259 and some commentators say there's really not a lot of difference between them to upgrade.
Why don't you look at Youtube as there are comparison videos on there.0 -
I would consider a laptop personally, you will presumably want to write your own stuff up too, but of course it depends on the duration of your studies4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Thanks for replies so far. I already have a laptop for writing essays on etc. Ipad or a 10 ish inch tablet would be for when I dont need to be doing that as it would be so much easier to carry around. I did think about a refurb but worry that would need to spend more money in the long term over the 3 years?0

As an iPad 1 owner who has just learnt that apple are no longer providing OS upgrades for us, I would say go for the latest. It seems that the reason we are not getting iOS6 is the RAM needed to run it. We have only 256mb, the iPad 2 has 512mb but the latest model has 1gb so you will get a bit longer life assuming that future upgrades will use more & more RAM (and when do they not?).
As for "Are they worth it?", I would say "No" but I still wouldn't be without mine. I use it every day.0 -
If you want a tablet, I'd look at something like the Asus Transformer series. They have a keyboard dock with built in battery so it can turn into a netbook which makes it far more useful and the price is about the same as an iPad.0
