NONCU tax code??

I have worked for the NHS for over 6 years, from May this year I gained a promotion, however the job I was promoted to was for 2 days per week and I work 4 days per week, so now I am doing 2 different jobs at 2 different rates of pay (band 6 and band 7) I get 2 wage slips and the tax code is exactly the same on both 599L NONCU
I earn more in one job, but I do have a car that I lease from the trust which comes out of my wages directly, this is shown on one payslip, (the lower paid job) I am unsure what I should be paying am I paying too much ??? according to the tax calculator I am but that doesnt include my car, dont really want to take it further if I end up owing the taxman! any ideas???

This doesn't sound right: whether you're paying too much or too little it's difficult to say, but normally when you have two jobs it works best if you get your tax code set against the job where you earn most, and have BR against the other.

If you post details from your last two payslips someone may be able to help more.

But I'm also not sure why you'd still be on a NonCumu tax code.

At the moment you are getting a personal allowance of £11980 which is clearly wrong. It's likely to see an underpayment of tax so extremely important that you get this sorted.

Post up the figures as requested.

    £11980?

It does look as though there is an error here - possibly the 599 code was correct on the original job (to take account of the car maybe?) but the additional job should be BR?

Or there could be an additional coding adjustment required if the OP is now a 40% tax payer?

This certainly needs sorting out before the OP finds himself with an underpayment?
  • Thanks for the replies, my wages are - band 6 job my gross pay is 11785 per year (982 per month) and band 7 gross pay is 12184 per year (1015 per month) my car lease is for £280 per month and I get a reduction in tax & NI on the band 6 wage slip, not sure what the NONCU means either? any ideas am I under or overpaying?????
    Thanks in advance :)

    Oops - yes.

    Almost certainly.

Noncu means non-cumulative. It means your tax is being looked at on a month to month basis as opposed to the normal cumulative tax code which looks at the whole tax year. It's generally used for emergency tax purposes.

You are underpaying tax by approximately £100 each month as you are getting 2 lots of personal allowance instead of one.

Your main job - usually the highest paid but doesn't matter much as both jobs are over the personal allowance - should have the tax code. Your 2nd job should have BR ( Basic Rate) as a tax code.

Your tax code of 599L is lower than the normal tax code of 810L but I assume this has been reduced because of the car lease. What does your P2 Coding notice say about the 599L tax code?

I suggest you get back to the NHS asap and ask why both jobs have been given a 599L tax code as this should not have happened. They need to operate the 599L code on one job and BR on the other.

Completing a P46 is what should have been done for the 2nd job.

I suspect a letter or phone call to HMRC may also be needed, explaining that both employers are using the same tax code. A P46 on the lower paid job may be enough to get the tax code there changed to BR, but if that's the one the car is attached to then that may not be enough to sort things out. Also as long as the code is NONCU the historic underpayment won't be collected - will it?

OP, what was your tax code last year? If you want to paste up the figures from your P60, an opinion may be forthcoming about whether there's a historic problem to address as well ...

    reduction in tax and NI

    Salary sacrifice scheme?

You really do need to sort this out with payroll/HMRC or you could end up with a nasty P800 shock?

No it won't. However you may find HMRC will not issue a cumulative tax code in this case as it would see a large amount of tax being taken off in one lump sum to correct the problem and they don't usually do that.

I was assuming the normal NHS pension scheme contribution being deducted where the NI would be lower as it's a contracted out scheme.
