I was watching a programme where they applied the oil to decking with a big yard brush. That seemed like a really useful tip to me as it would take ages to paint/oil our decking and be quite backbreaking too.0

As someone with 'insider knowledge' of such things may I recommend something like Ronseal Decking Seal which is breathable and doesnt blister. Unlike oil which evaporates, this clear product will last about three years. Can be applied with a broom or long coated paint roller. It helps stop BBQ stain better than oil. Oil is best done every year. resist the temptation to put down coloured stains on a deck as these can 'walk off' during a hard winter. Best to keep it 'natural'. for spindles and rails use Decking stain in a natural pine colour.
Before applying the deck needs a scrub. use something like stardrops rather than an expensive deck cleaner. Dont use a power washer. They use too much water and can cuase stripping if not done methodically. Use a superpray hose end sprayer to spray on the detergent and leave for a few mins. Scrub with a brush then rinse clean. Bottle of stardrops is less than a quid I think compared to deck cleaners costing £7 or £8 for 5 litres. five caps of stardrops in a superpray will wash about 50 sq. m.

i must say you are the first person who has recommended this product, All other references have stated you use this product at your peril!
I must say I agree with them! it is absolutely useless, and has no longevity to the product at all.0
