unique visitors

If this is a stupid question please excuse me , I have some houses over the road from an internet based company who have a website to do with cars, I got talking to one of the owners today nice chap and from just the 2 of them they have built up to a lot of staff recently .Anyway my question is talking to him he said they were now getting 15000 unique visitors a day so on the way home I am adding these up and would be around 5 /12 million visitors a year , surely there comes a time when there can not be any more unique visitors ? there would not be enough people in the country ?
or does it not work like this

thanks

    unique visitors per day

  • Yeah, it could be the same 15000 visiting each day; a fair proportion of them probably are (car people being car people).

The count works by cookies, too, so anyone who clears cookies between visits (possibly not as common as it used to be?) will be counted more than once.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

Yes the numbers surprised me too , there is no reason for him to tel me anything wrong though , so what the above poster has said ,let me get this right that if I clear cookies , which I do from time to time and say go back on MSE then Google counts me as new ? with the analytics? he said something else too about google changing recently the way they do or count as at one time they were showing nearly 25,000 unique per day with 4.1 million page impressions a month if that makes any sense
to get this into perspective how many does this site get unique?

According to Google Analytics, the MoneySavingExpert website attracted approximately 39 million unique visitors and approximately 277 million page impressions in the year ended 31 October 2011.

So from the above this guys site is about 1/8th the size of MSE but I still don't understand say MSE has been going for all these years now and had 39million in that year it has had loads of unique in previous years so in theory all the UK should have looked at it by now ( keeping it very basic and excluding rest of world) so where do the unique people come from or does it mean unique visits? say like I may have 5 unique visits a week?

Unique in a year means they count one visit in that year ie if the year is jan to dec if you went on on the 31 dec 2012 that is a unique visit in 2012 and if you went on on the 1st jan 2013 that would count as a unique visit in 2013. If you went on the 2 jan 2013 that would not count, unless you had cleared your cookies!

you also get addons like Ghostery. This remove all cookies each time you start the browser and blocks third party elements like chartbeat and google analytics, so between having quick peek at work and home, probably counts as a few new visits a day.

Those stats are so misleading as to only be worth anything when compared with stats compiled by the same exact technique - alone, they mean very little. People used to brag about hit count, until they realised by doubling the images on a page, they doubled the hitcount - meaningless number. And yes, unique visitors will be per day, so the same guys coming back daily count every day.

Remember also that spiders count towards that figure, so car sites may be being spidered by many custom spiders for search engines, for price comparisons, for advertising purposes etc. Spiders will sometimes play nicely, and sometimes try to appear as organic traffic and count as many dozens/hundreds of unique visitors. Especially likely if the traffic is the same shape despite weekends/holidays etc.

The numbers are a guide, but to be taken only in context, and with a huge pinch of salt.

Thanks for clearing a lot of this up for me , so I can assume that from reading above that the clock gets re-set every year , the visitor numbers are a rough guide .
    great

You can look at the houses for sale in your street, your local area, etc through Zoopla, and Zoopla has an option to sort those houses by 'most popular', and that will tell you how many views on a popular property website those houses are getting in the last month.

I've never seen any in my area go above double figures in one month. I've just looked at London, and the most popular property in London has been viewed 5,249 times in the last 30 days - an average of 175 times per day.

...and your neighbour is getting 86 times this viewing traffic, through a non-property specific site? Naahhhhh.....
