I would panic if that happened to me."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Dear Forum ,
In Nov 2010 I transferred our bank accounts from the Halifax to the Coop Bank and have had nearly two years of sound as a bell service from a local call center and computer system , yesterday Friday afternoon 05/10/12 ATMs down , branch system down , online down . This morning it appears that it's Lloyds/TSB who are now going to takeover the Coop Bank systems and this was their introductory stab at it . I went to the Coop in the first place as being the best chance of avoiding such as RBS and Lloyds/TSB , but where now ? Bank executives cannot seem to understand that their computer system IS their bank and for the Coop to put themselves into the same position in a hiearchy as the poor Ulster Bank is with RBS is pitiful . Any hope anyone ?

As Co-op is independent I'd expect stiff penalty clauses to be included in any IT framework agreement. That might actually shift them to the top of the queue for a fix.0 -
Dear Opinion4U ,
According to reports the Lloyds/TSB outage was one hour and the Coop outage two hours , maybe suggesting a sequence of fixing in the manner of RBS/NW and Ulster Bank . The reason that all of this can only be the subject of speculation is because of the lack of transparency and downright furtiveness about the Banks' plans for their various systems , and I suspect that this furtiveness is down to their fear about customer's reactions . Further the 'badge engineering' approach to industrial development has a notoriety of leading to poor outcomes in Britain and I'm afraid we're about to see another example . Pick a name , any name : NatWest , RBS , HBOS , Lloyds/TSB , TSB etc. and continue with a makedo and mend investment policy ,

Given the level of "panic" an hour of so non availability has produced...........
Can I now take it that we are all of us agreed that the idea of letting a bank actually go bust and cease trading with no access to your money for possibly weeks would be a really very bad idea indeed.
As regards the systems failures in general - at the moment we seem to have something that works probably 99% of the time. The question then becomes are you the user is prepared to pay the costs of the banks having systems guaranteed to work 100% of the time when the cost of eliminating the final 1% of downtime is very high indeed.
Or put another way do we all have spare cars sitting idle at home, fully taxed, insured, MOT'd, serviced etc, ready to go just for the one time every year or so when our main car breaks down? The answer is no - because the cost is too great.0 -
