Hi I need to book a hotel today online does it matter if I use a debit card or credit card?
Will they charge a conversion rate on both of them? I only have a debit card as I am awaiting a credit card for the holiday but can use parents if needs be.
Thanks

you can use a credit or a debit card. Are you paying now, or just guaranteeing the room?
I dont understand the conversion question?
Some hotel groups might charge a fee for credit cards, but this should be clearly stated at time of booking.0 -
I thought that there would be a fee for converting from $ in to £, but possibly with a credit card there is no fee?
It is to pay now.0 -
I would not (and never have) use my debit card to pay for anything whilst abroad.
Visitors are always seen as an easy target for any sort of scam or fraud, because they don't usually become aware of it until some weeks later.
Secondly, if there is any fraud on your debit card, it is your money the fraudster has taken. Fraud on a credit card is the bank's money.
I would say only use a debit card in ATMs whilst travelling and even in the UK use it in the minimum number of places.0 -
Fees, rates etc come down to a combination of the network (visa, mastercard, amex etc) and the issuer.
There is no universal reason why credit or debit cards on the same network would be different in terms of rate or fee but each issuer (natwest, capital one, mbna, amex etc) comes up with their own commercial decisions.
The additional protection you get under a credit card payment can make it the more sensible option though0 -
You only usually give card details to book a hotel room so they can bill you for a late cancellation or no-show.
If you arrive on the right day you pay on departure, when they add on the various extras you use during your stay.0 -

Plus if you book through a 3rd party like Hotels.com they often also require prepayment0 -
If I'm booking through a 3rd party site, I usually try to call to pay part on my credit card and the rest on my debit card0

if now she said would be using parents card, so be 3rd partyDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -

But any fraud is refunded STRAIGHT back to your account. PSD for you.
Unless you have been stupid enough to hand your PIN out.
Given the cost of using a cedit card in a ATM. Fee's and interest from day taken.
Using a debit card is the best option.
Not even sure how fraud has even got into this threadWhen OP was asking about best card to use....

I wouldn't rely on that if I were you. I know someone whose debit card was used either side of midnight at a cost of £500. They insisted he must have given his PIN away or not protected it which was not true (although obviously it could have been skimmed somewhere). Anyway, he reported it immediately and assumed he would get it back eventually but they bluntly refused. HSBC I think.
Using a credit card is much better and safer IMO - and you can get cashback, earn more interest etc. As someone else said, it's not your money, it's theirs0
