Has anyone else had a real bumper year for runner beans?

Can't believe how well our runner beans have done this year, we've had so many we've been giving them away to neighbours and family, we're now into October and we are still getting plenty.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Yes we have, I guess they like the damp then :D That said we always do and know full well to only grow them every other year.

We have too. I think my family and friends pretend not to be in if they see me at the door with a carrier bag in my arms!!:p

Yes, lots here, but I grow them to dry and store. Black and white ones mainly. Boil them for 10min to get rid of the colour/toxins. Then cook til tender and freeze in meal portions. Free protein.

We've had our best year yet for runner beans.
Just as well, cos the slugs have had a field day with most other things.
Least we've got freezer full of beans to keep us going.
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

  • I must be in the minority then! Mine have come too late, i have had quite a few off them but nowhere near as many as usual, infact they still have flowers on them now! I planted them at the same time as usual too. Oh well, my onions were the best i've ever grown this year though...some you win, some you lose...thats the fun of gardening.
  • I couldn't get them past the slugs and snails this year, so no :(

We grow lots of runner bean plants to sell in our charity shop, so get lots of feedback. This year has been the only year that most people have said that their crops have been lousy. Either the wet and slugs killed the plants when young, or the flowers didnt set through lack of bees. All the successful growers where lucky enough to have lots of bees in their gardens.

Far from being a bumper year it has been a bummer year! About a handful has been harvested. Extremely poor.
