Aqualisa Thermostatic Cartridge

Temperature control in my shower has been a bit erratic lately so i removed the cartridge to see if it was corroded [replaced one almost 3 years ago that had corroded] the element is still intact though, a mucky gunge has formed at both ends and was just wondering how best to remove this.....
