Apple iPhone 4 Set Up on iTunes - help needed please

I have an Apple iPhone 3 which is connected via my computer to the Apple iTunes site. I have my own email address and password login details for purchases.
My OH has just got an iPhone 4 and I've made a complete mess of setting it up to ITunes.
It would be better for us I guess to have the same account from the point of view of sharing the iTunes account for purchases of apps and music to put on our iPod. However we don't want to share the same apps on our phones.
So, we were eventually put through to someone at Apple who re-set up my OH's iPhone on iTunes, so both phones show separately on there when plugged in.
The trouble we have now is, do we need to share the same email and password login details for the iTunes account? If this is the case then how do we change his logging in details, which are presently different? Yes I could go back to Apple help but wondered if anyone could help me get my non techie brain around this one.

There is a drop down menu on the iTunes toolbar, top left (I think, haven't got it in front of me), where you can sign and and out with different accounts.0

On the iPhone go in to settings > iTunes &app store
Touch on the apple ID: xxxxxxx banner at the top and choose sign out, then sign back in again with the details that match yours
Turn off automatic downloads for apps so that yours don't get copied on automatically to his0
