I know very little techie stuff, so the question I am about to ask will prove that, (no doubt) What's the difference between the kindle fire and the ipad? Obviously the price is different (significantly) but in simplistic terms what else?

I personally not recommend kindle fire. you will be restricted by amazon, and you can't access to google play freely.
What is your main use and what is your budget? I believe ipad mini should out soon, if you want to stick to Apple.

I have a Nexus 7, seemed to me to be a better bet than the Kindle Fire.
