How long before penalty points are spent?

I had an interview today for a job and at the end she asked if i had any criminal convictions and naturally i said no. She then said she asks because if i'm successful i have to have a CRB check done so anything, including any driving offences, will show up. So i then said well actually i did get caught speeding but that i think it would be spent by now. I didnt even know something like a speeding ticket would show up on a crb.

Anyway it was just over 3 years ago now (august 2009) so i assume they are 'spent' but im having doubts and i dont want it to look like i've lied.

I've looked online but people are saying different things. Can anyone here confirm it for me please?

  • They are spent after 3 years, can be removed after 4 as far as I'm aware.

No idea if they show on a CRB check, but if they do, I'd assume they are not going to be treated the same as a more serious crime like assault or any offence concerning dishonesty/ breach of trust. Half the population have probably got a SP30 on their licenses.
  • They stay on your licence for four years from date of offence.

She did say something like that wouldn't prevent me from doing the job. I just dont want them to appear and for it to look like i've lied thus getting off on a bad start, if i got off at all.

Most traffic offences aren't considerred criminal, so don't come up on your CRB.

Trust me, over the years I've had more points than a hedgehog, and my CRB still comes back clean!
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

The points are current for three years, they stay on your licence for four years, but the conviction is not spent until five years.

    Thank you, much clearer :)

And thank you for people who have said they don't appear on CRB checks. You have put my mind at rest.

Though of course if mine do i'll know where to come to vent :p

If you didn't go to court for speeding and just received a fixed penalty notice, then it is not a criminal conviction - you don't get a criminal record and this doesn't appear on a CRB check.
