Car Insurance, additional driver quote

Hiya,

Im with Ecar insurance, and enquired 2 weeks ago about the cost of adding my brother in law as an additional driver, with cover to start from Friday 5th Oct.

I was given a quote of about £72, with cover until the end of the policy, with the quote being valid for 7 days.

I then logged into my ecar account on Monday 1st Oct to do another quote, as I had passed the 7 days quote validity period.

I was given a quote of £71.50, with cover until the end of the policy, with the quote being valid for 7 days, I didn't complete the purchase, as I didn't have the payment card on me.

Yesterday evening, Wednesday 3rd Oct, I logged back into my account, to go ahead with the purchase, BUT when I went to complete it, the quote was recalculated to a new figure of about £308!

I went back through the details, and noticed that the main driver had changed from myself (Policy holder) to the additional driver I had added, so I changed it back to myself, but the quote still stayed the same at about £308.

Looking up the £71.50 quote with then ref number and my email, also brought up zero results.

I called up ECar today to find out why the quote has shot up almost 4 times, and they kept telling me it's to do with fluctuating insurance premiums, which I find ridiculous.

ECare couldn't retrieve my old quote of £71.50, as the new one of £308 had overwritten it, and could not

I went back to their website, and attempted another quote (just in case it's my fault for leaving it to 2 days before start date), and set the date for 2 weeks forward. But this made no difference, and the quote came back to £300.

Is there anything I could do?

Many thanks.

Been a few reports of people getting quotes on comparison sites.

After playing with different options, The quotes suddenly start getting dearer.
Its been said its maybe something to do with fraud prevention.

Getting quotes may appear like you trying to beat the system. Flags up as fraud prevention and increases.

If your not happy with the price you will need to cancel and go elsewhere. But watch out for cancellation charges.

  • My policy is with ecar, and had been for a few months.

The quotes have only been for additonal driver and that's it.
Those quotes were also via phone / website of ecar, so I had an indication of how much it would cost.

Do you have a copy of the quotes anywhere?
  • Unfortunately they don't send a quote email, all they give is a ref.
If I look up that ref, it no longer exists.

I just want them to answer why it's gone up 4 times. £50, £100 I understand, bit it's gone up almost £240

    Marketing.
They offer you a silly price, when you take the bait, they reel you in and tell you the real price.

Write them a letter of complaint, stating you want them to honour the quoted price, or you will refer the complaint to the FOS, as they are not treating the customer fairly.
