Need to cash a HMRC cheque with NO bank account

Hi,

I did have a bank account (HSBC) around 4-5 years ago, got into some difficulty's with money and ended up owing the bank around £1500 in overdraft, fees.

I have since not had a bank account and have been unable to pay back the money owed. I have not heard anything from the bank in years, not tried to get any kind of credit either.

I have just received a tax rebate from HMRC for £100 which would be very helpful right now but, it's account payee only so cannot sign it over to my wife to cash.

Was thinking about opening the most basic account at Barclays but, worried HSBC will come out of the woodwork for their money which is fair enough I just do not have the cash to pay them off right now.

Do you think I will drop myself in it if I try and open an account at Barclays?

Cheers

ChexSystems is a USA based solution and doesnt operate in the UK.

There are the Credit Reference Agencies here and yes if HSBC monitors it they will see you have a current account with Barclays but the CRAs only hold debt information and so they'd have no way of knowing if your balance is £1 or £100,000

Open a savings account and it wont show at all

Good idea, just find your local independent building society, am sure you have one?
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.

you could ask hmrc whether you could return the cheque and ask them to make one out payable to a nominee ?
