Barclaycard changing my graduate card to gold card - can you refuse this?

Hi

As the title suggests, Barclaycard "understands that as my life evolves so should my credit card to meet my needs" and are therefore changing my card to a gold card.

I am always sceptical about stuff like this. How do they know what my life requires or not? In my experience when a company decides to move you onto another card, tariff etc that is normally to the detriment of the customer with hidden charges here there and everywhere. (maybe overdramtic here but you get my gist)

In reality I am actually happy with what I have got and I would like to be the one who decides what I would like to do with my evolving life. So are you able to refuse this like you can do with rate increases? I know I can ask barclaycard directly so maybe I want to understand why they decide to do stuff like this? Could it be that they are getting rid of graduate barclaycard credit card if anyone knows this?

Thanks for your help

Have you actually considered what card A offers and compared it against card B?

What benefits are there of your card? Looking online it says the card has been discontinued but historic documents suggest it is just the same as the Gold card. Could be that the Gold can go to a different limit subject to your status but unless they are also offering to change your limit or rate then it is simply the design of the piece of plastic thats changing basically

I believe Student and Graduate accounts generally have eligibility criteria and conditions (e.g. HSBC say must have graduated within 2 years) after which you get moved to a different account type. Don't think you can do anything about it or will suffer much, perhaps a lower overdraft.
  • Barclaycard did this to me a couple years after I graduated. Everything stayed the same, except I got a new coloured card - same account, same balance, same rate, same number.

Your mileage may, of course, vary.

I also received an email from Barclaycard today, indicating the new 'Gold'' card will be sent out in the next few days, but it does state that my terms and conditions won't change, so not really expecting much.

I was a graduate ten years ago, so it can't be that good, if it's taken them this long to 'upgrade' me. ;)

They only have to tell you if terms have changed not if they havent.

The "upgrade" is just a different looking card
  • I've had exactly the same letter with a Gold card replacing my graduate card (even though I graduated 14 years ago!)

Its just the card design, with no change to terms as the graduate account has been discontinued - They haven't bothered changing my Mastercard Classic account.

I've had my graduate Barclaycard for ten years, now I've just been 'upgraded' to the Barclaycard Gold. Same T&Cs, just a different colour but I don't like it :(. Looks tacky, puke-yellow. I want my old classic card back!
