my insurance expires midnight on 13th october, if i get new insurance is it ok if it starts on 14th october?

Or it gets damaged or stolen in that time.
My mates are mad, One went on holiday and his insurance ran out mid-week.
Not wanting to waste beer money he thought ahh get it sorted when he came back.
They hid the car. When he came back they wound him up saying he cant report it stolen as it wasnt insured but was on the road.
He will get fined and points etc..
He wont be doing that again.
Of course i wouldnt do such a thing, I am mature
