debit card-homestudy course bust

In 2007 I was fed up of not being able to get a job so I spent my 5grand savings on a home study course.
After 2years and working in a local warehouse on min wage so I could still put food on the table, I took my 2nd exam.
After waiting to get the course material for the 3rd part of the course as it was 5exams long, I never heard back from anyone.
I emailed, phone, wrote letters and never got any response.
After 6months of nothing I heard back from a recovery team who claimed the company had gone bust. I had 2 options try and claim my money back or go on with the course through another company.
Well after not hearing anything for so long I had started a college course so I wanted to claim my money back.
Thats when the recovery team never responded to anything.
Basically Im looking for advice, Can i claim my money back some how. Someone mentioned going to my bank as the course was under the consumer act 1974. The bank will give me the money back and then its up to them to go after the company even if they cant get anything.
Is this true?

  • DId you pay the full amount of money upfront or did you enter into a credit agreement with the provider, paying x amount per month?

If it is the first option, and you paid by Debit Card not credit card, then sadly you are out of luck, your money will have gone with the company and recourse for compensation is sadly nil.
  • I paid half upfront and then 200 every month till it was paid for.
