Just because it's legal it doesn't make it right. Even when I was married my husband and I didn't open eachother's mail.....Practically Perfect in Every Way......:grinheart0

So what you are saying is because people share the same address they are legally allowed to open each others mail with out permission?
I think what's being said is that there is "reasonable excuse" - that they wish to identify why their address is being used, to prevent any impact on the householder - and there is no "dishonest intent" - they do not intend to do anything dishonest with the contents.
You need either dishonest intent or no reasonable excuse for an offence once delivery has occurred. Neither applied; ergo - no offence committed :cool:0 -

I always open mail sent to my address, if i received a credit card for my ex, i would send it back stating 'not at this address'.0

I would always open mail that comes to my address. Its how I identified in the past my name had been used for fraudulent purposes when I moved house and more recently how I had been connected on my credit record to another house in my village (similar house names) which I then had corrected.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0

His parents probably open his mail because they know he's getting into trouble financially. If you suddenly have someone having their financial stuff sent to your address then you have every right to be worried, particularly if he's giving silly answers when you ask him about it. If he really was an upright citizen who was suffering unfairly at the hands of his parents then he'd ask you first if he could use your address.
Personally if it were me, if he was unable or unwilling to change the address I would just keep all of it. Make him ask for it back, then he can explain face to face why he has this problem.0 -
I would be worried and p eed off if someone was using my address to obtain credit which they may have no intention of paying off, the baliffs will be knocking at your door not his. I would tell him to sort it out, and just bin everthing that came for him saying you have had nothing through the door.0
