Family member using my adress but doesn't live here!
Hi I need some advise
About 2 weeks I got a letter through the post addressed to my brother in law who does not live here or has ever had stayed here, I confronted my partner about , and he said that he had mensoned that he was going to started getting his mail sent here, I stated how unhappy I was with this and not to even know anything about it so he said he would get it changed again!
So anyway yesterday a others letter comes through but has a card, with worry I opened and guess what it was a credit card it did say a replacement credit card but a credit none the less, so with anger I opened his first letter and it turns up to be from co-operative bank sayin his recent application has been decilined , so basic does that mean he has went and had a credit check on my address ?
I was so upset and angry and have been made to feel as if it isn't a big deal and am over reacting , if you some one could tell what this will mean to mean and where do I stand thank you

Credit files are specific to an individual not an address.
Any credit applications or credit accounts he has at your address will not affect your file or your ability to get credit.
Thats not to say I would be particularly happy in your situation either. If he defaulted on his debts and disappeared you would have the hassle of debt collection letters etc arriving at your house.
Does he have his own permanent address? or is he using your because he doesn't have an address to use?A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
The credit check will be against him at your address, but will not impact on your credit profile in anyway. So on that front nothing to worry about.0

He lives with his parents but they open his mail that's why he wanted to change but I feel that's really not my problem , that's a relief knowing it won't affect me directly ,
But stil not happy he though this would be all right to do, he said he went to the bank and he said bank said he couldn't change address within the same month !! If that's true , I suppose all I cam do is wait and see if he changes it and take it from there thanks for the reply it's taken a weight of my chest . Ps am a worrier0 -
Very unlikely that the bank cannot change an address twice in a month - people do have to move at short notice and are entitled to have their mail to their correct home.
For a lot of his mail / credit accounts he can probably have the majority of things statements etc sent by email. Or of course tackle the matter with his parents as to why they are opening his mail (or move out I suppose). As you say though, its not your problem.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
Is that 100% definate? That an address cannot be blacklisted? Because the last tenant of the private let we live in, said we may have problems with credit here because she had, for the whole 18 months she had lived there. Because this address had a history of bad debt from the private let tenants who had lived there for the past 5 years before *she* moved in. And when I worked in housing, some people complained that they were having issues with credit because of the previous tenant's debt. Not contradicting or saying anyone is wrong, but I am just wondering if the info and advice given is 100% correct.0

The only time that this seems to happen is in relation to fraud.
If fraud has been committed at the address in the past, then that could appear on the CIFAS section of your credit file, even though the fraud was not in your name or alleged to have been connected to you.
If someone felt this was happening to them it would be worth checking their credit files and the CIFAS section in particular.
Some people will think that its down to the address the live in that they can't get credit, without taking into account
-that its much harder to get credit now than historically,
-that they perhaps haven't yet registered on the electoral roll or that this hasn't been updated on their credit files (and it can take 4months during autumn)
-that generally lenders like signs of stability and sometimes moving address could be enough to tip a credit application to a declineA smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

He changes his address to his brothers address as his parents open his mail. Now his sister in law does the same.0 -
Rather than opening his mail, not sure of the legality of you doing so, why not just mark it as "not known at this address" and put it in a post box?0
