Did you notice any strong smells of organic solvents eg the ones that are used in some paints, paintstrippers etc? Or chlorine, which can be released by mixing bleach and some other cleaning products?

I came over a bit faint and dizzy when using paint stripper for longer than recommended, even with the windows open.

If your hot water is supplied by the boiler it would have been working hard to fill the bath. If you have been busy cleaning and painting with the windows open have you been using the heating?. Its worth getting the boiler serviced for peace of mind. Annual service from the Housing Association, assuming the tenant allowed access, many don't, plus 6 months void could mean a minimum 1.1/2 years without a service.
  • Just wanted to reply with an update.

So after posting originally, we had the damp proofing done. We found a big patch of black mould lurking behind some wallpaper, cleaned that all up and didn't have much bother after that.

Until yesterday when I had another episode in the morning, where my breathing was very short and having heart palpitations. Went off to work but again had another episode, headed off to the hospital and by the time I got there was having real trouble breathing and taken in to A&E!

So it looks like I'm having asthmatic reactions to the paint. I never realised how toxic paint could be and only learnt yesterday that the toxic fumes continue to be released over several days when the paint is drying.

It's hard as we don't have anywhere to go whilst decorating. So i guess it's just a case of opening up all the doors/ windows as much as possible.

    Thanks for all the comments!
