hole in plaster ceiling under light rose

we moved in about a year ago. we are just getting round to changing the light fittings and removed the rose for the light in the kitchen. the whole underneath was huge and a right mess. our new lights dont cover the hole as they are narrower. what is the best way to cover the 'now visible' gap in the plaster?. i am happy to give it a go myself but i think that the hole is too big for polyfiller so am open to suggestions. obviously i dont want the expense of getting a plasterer in to do that little bit.
thanks

You need something to plug the hole so you can then skim over it.
I'd probably use an offcut of plaster board, or failing that wood, cardboard or even scrunched up paper. liberally coat it in something like coving adhesive, make sure you are below the finished level. When its dry skim over. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I would do the same as penrhyn said, infact I have done it with newspaper, and just filled over, and its still there.:D0
