poorly puppy

someonen i know bought a puppy about a week ago. paid cash (approx £200) now the pup is in the vets overnight with suspected parvo with ongoing tests.
where do they stand with the previous owner ie the breeders regards financial reimbursement and/or returning pup to them for full refund? also with vet bills
the pup isnt expected to live being so ill :(
i'm only asking out of curiosity and maybe guide them on the right route

In cases like this previous owners never seem to want to know, so highly doubt any chance of getting mmoney back. However please get your friend to go back to the sellers, and try everything they can to ensure that this person does not continue to breed. Try the RSPCA(can but try), local newspaper, sellers vets (if they have any), council if its a council house, trading standards, anything that you can think of If this pup has it then chances are the other poor !!!!!!s will have it.

Really is a horrible situation, as neighbours dogs may be at risk if they've been near the garden where the pup has been.

Good luck to the pup, I've seen a few pull through.

Hopefully others may have some other ideas, but although upset, your friend, if it was me I'd do everything legal I could to stop them breeding. The sellers may not even be the breeders- I know of one person who buys shhepdog pups for £10 from farmers and then sells them straight on for a few hundred pounds.

    good luck to the puppy.

If its a refund they want then I imagine they need to go to small claims court and prove the puppy was 'not fit for purpose' or 'not of reasonable quality' perhap. Trading Standards might get involved if the vet is willing to testify that the breeder has sold the pup with false information, e.g. proof or a vert likely chance the puppy wasn't vaccinated if the breeder claimed it was, or obvious health defects that the owner wasn't told about. Basically, they'll have to go about things as if it was a broken laptop or a broken down car, which may be tough on them if they lose the poor pup so worth them deciding if its worth all that other avenues like going to the council, reporting possible tax evasion, reporting to landlord or mortgage company that a business is being run from the premises and so on won't get their money back but may stop the same thing happening to someone else in the future

Caveat emptor, surely? Next time buy from a reputable breeder (at the minimum, KC registered).

You might want to scan this thread from a harder-nosed forum. One comment that summarises it:
    Private sale = game over.

But you might want to check out #55 for the legal situation.

pup is home and holding its own though not out of the woods yet. for the money they paid, i'd want pedigree with papers and at least 1st vaccinations but for that money i would have gone the rescue route

my two dogs are about a year old and i had them vaccinated, microchipped and neutered plus defleaed, wormed, insured etc etc. cost an arm and a leg but i knew the approx cost when i got them

Glad to hear that the pup is improving. Parvo has quite a distinct smell, so vets can be pretty sure its parvo, but they wont be able to prove what it is until any faeces results are back. There's other things like salmonella that have got to be considered.

krylyr has come up with good ideas- those sellers need to have everything done to try and stop them passing on more pups.

Is the puppy vaccinated, does the vaccination record tie up with the puppy's microchip? Legally they will be entitled to a full refund of the purchase price if they hand the puppy back or it dies. Good luck getting that from a puppy farmer tho. They cannot get their veterinary costs paid, reputable breeders give insurance usually with Petplan.

Please ask your friend to do a LOT more research before getting another pet, she has probably supported cruel practices involving the whole breeding process, many b1tches and other puppies. Please only get a pet from a reputable, professional breeder or a rescue, you would never get a puppy with parvo from a reputable source.
