British gas want money

Options
Can i ring British gas and come to an agreement with paying my bill??

Basically i got so fed up with them when we bought our 1st house i switched supplier a month ago. The reason i got fed up with them, was when we moved in, in Oct 06 i gave our details over like you would. Come Feb our gas/electric still wasn't in our name. They refused to take payments from us as the account was still 'the occupier' and wouldn't take payment until our names appeared on it.

Hence now i get a massive bill for over £200 saying it must be paid or they'll take action. Im annoyed in a way as they stuffed us around with not getting it right and now its all fine for them they want the money asap.

I can have it paid off come 22nd of this month as i get paid monthy. Would they accept that do you think???? Im just after advice before i do ring them.

I think Powergen's policy is that they'll let you pay it off over as long as it took them to accrue the bill - if it's a quarterly bill they want payment over three months from the bill date (I think)

I'd have thought that BG are the same? If not, tell them smugly you'll pay when you can be bothered "thankyouverymuch", just like they did to you!

If you call their collections department they will allow you three installments - one you must pay immediately and two more over the next couple of months. Otherwise you could follow Timmne's advice and have your credit file ruined ;)
  • My Mum had a similiar problem with British Gas, they would not take her money for almost a year despite her phoning them and instructing them to do so. In the end they sent her a similar letter insisting that she paid them riduculous sums of money each month in order to pay off her debts. However, she phoned them, explained that she had tried to pay them the money and therefore it was their error; she then told them she would only increase her payments by a small amount each month (which she had calculated she could afford) therefore paying it off, but over a longer period. They accepted this.

To be honest though I would suggest trying to find a different supplier - I've been in my house 7months, however I've still not paid for any of my Gas (despite making numerous phonecalls). Whereas my parents have been recieving two Electricity bills for their house and have been threatened with legal action!

I hope this is helpful to you!

Has anyone else experienced problems with British Gas and the efficiency (or inefficiency) of their services? - even one of their staff told me on the phone last week that she could not understand how their new billing system worked when I phoned to have my Electricity bill explained - what an admission!

Sorry for my ramblings, this is driving me mad at the moment!
  • I've had a similar problem in the past but with Scottish Power. A rep from Scottish Gas suggested that I get in touch with Energy Watch who sorted the problem out and fixed it so that I only had to pay a fraction of what they were looking for. The phone number for Energy Watch is 0845 9060708 (sorry I only have an 0845 number for them)
Hope they can help you and that you get it sorted out.

Perhaps I am missing something here.

If someone knows they should be paying gas/electricity/water etc(and inefficient firms don't collect it) why don't they set that money aside and put it in a bank account or even under the matress.

It seems people think it mandatory to spend the money instead and then complain they haven't got the means to pay the bill and that they are not in any way at fault.

    Hi there..

You have a couple of problems there...if you change suppliers British Gas will give you 3 months exception to pay off an outstanding balance without causing your credit issue etc, ignoring it will bring u problems within a month or so.....I hate to be a smart alec but did you not think about putting money aside since u knew you where not paying your bills..people seem to think that just because its gas/ electric etc its not the same as say a credit card.......

it is and will get ya a bad rating if ya dont pay, even if it is partly there fault.. the one big thing with the energy companys..they dont charge you interest on your balance.. <thanks god!>
Hey folks...remember I might work for the company but I am a human and working in my own time, I will not responde to people who are rude, sarcy and crits me. My views and comments do not reflect British Gas and they are totally unreasponsable for my responses.
