Claim money on estimated bill - powergen

Hi
I was a customer with Powergen about 5-6 years ago.
We moved into a rented property and provided Powergen with the meter reading for both gas and electric and set up payment with them. Just over a year later we received a call from them stating that we hadn't been billed for about a year and as we had been using their service we would have to pay.
It appears that they were unable to establish what our starting meter reading was for both the gas and electric, and it looks like they pulled an estimated figure out of thin air.
Foolishly I paid their estimate, and then promptly left Powergen. I believe that the estimate that they came up with was far too high for what we used. Although we have moved properties since, our bills are now significantly lower.
Does anyone think I would be able to claim money back as I think I was mis-charged? I am not saying that we didn't owe money, but not what we had paid.
Cheers

You want money back, which you paid 4-5 years ago, from a company that no longer exists?

Morning Mrnigsey,
To be honest the answer is no.
If you were billed from estimated start readings but had the actual 's, then we would have used these if you gave them to us.
Did you contact us when you didn't get billed for a year, asking where the bills was?
Did you dispute this issue at the time?
But 5-6 years ago is long time ago to investigate this now really.
Sorry I can't really be of much help to honest.

I don't want to comment about the specific case, only your "5 - 6" years comment. Technically is it not still legally open? From time to time there are forum reports of suppliers pursuing billing issues after a number of years.0 -

Hi Jalexa,
I understand what your saying.
These sorts of complaints are normally raised with us when they get an estimated or (high) bill.We would then get back up reads, accurate reads or whatever to get it resolved.
From what the OP put, they appear to have received bills, paid them and moved out.
They don't appear to have raised it as an issue at the time.
As they have also moved properties, the bills will be different as all properties are different so usage won't be the same. This also ,then raises the problem of being able to provide meter readings from the house they moved out of to give us the chance to look at them, compare the actual usage to the estimates etc.
