MS Works & Anti-virus packages

Many laptops now sold seem to have an anti-virus application (usually McAfee or Norton) pre-installed as part of the deal. Are these comparable to the security packages on the high street or are they diluted versions, as I suspect? Likewise with pre-installed MS Works, is it comparable to Openoffice or MS Home & Student for creating word documents?
Thanks
