Is it worth renting a cooker?

We are buying a new house and the house needs complete updating. There is no cooker and the house we are selling is a intergrated cooker.

Is it worth us renting a cooker? Has anyone done this?

if you can afford to buy your better off doing that
but if you buy try to future proof yourself and get a cooker that if you replace the kitchen will still be used

I think it depends how long until you fit kitchen and how long you can manage without. We bought a house with no cooker and managed for about 3 months without, had a microwave, a rice cooker, and an electric steamer. It drove me a bit mad but it worked!

If it's for a short time, buy a second hand freestanding cooker, which will be far cheaper than a new one.

You can then sell it again when you get the new kitchen.

We have been living without a cooker for the past year as we just cannot afford to keep feeding the Aga. We have a Panasonic combination microwave that I use as a conventional oven or grill. It works really well and is large enough to get a large joint in and cooks it lovely. Even did xmas cakes in it last year. We also have a slow cooker and an electric portable induction hob that I use every day. We manage fine whilst saving up to have a new range when the new kitchen is installed.

There are £30 mini cooker/grills at Aldi/Lidl on a regular basis. Also available in other places. And/or a combination oven/microwave. Could get the two for £100 brand new.... and even when you get your real cooker they'll still be handy anyway, so it's not money wasted.

It really depends on what you cook, by what method, how often and for how many people.

Just out of interest...how much does renting a cooker cost and what do you get for your money...

Ive never heard of the concept before ...just thinking on the downside that you'll nedd to clean it prior to giving it back...

  • Not sure off hand about cooker renting but I rent my washer/dryer. This costs me £16 per month. At present I cant afford a chunk of money for one.
I do keep meaning to but one but the model I have at the mo is a good make and would struggle to buy new as such. Plus the things that I have called them out to fix are small repairs like the dial. These would have cost more to call out the engineer.
I can also upgrade anytime I choose.
    Matter of personal choice really

mm £16 pm on the face of it does not sound too steep, however, over two years that amounts to £384 which is more than my current washing machine has cost me over the past 6 years. It is personal choice I agree and now I know how much it costs to rent one, I tihnk I will stand by my personal choice on that one!

I agree, renting an appliance is expensive, if you take an average life of a washer dryer it should be 10 years (longer hopefully), thats £ 1,920 in rental thats an awful lot of washer dryer.

same principal applies to the cooker
  • Yes but dont forget to factor in the cost of any repairs.
I agree it can be the more expensive option but I can call a repair man without second thought for cost or parts.
