Internet Connection Problem

A friend of mine was given his ex-work PC, as they replaced all PC's. It was connected to a server in work and internet connection was through the server.
He bought a modem as he wishes to connect to the internet from home. When he used "Make New Connection" the number dialled but is always engaged. Two different numbers were dialled (which I gave him) with the same result.
Could there be something still running, from when it was a server PC, that is causing the problem. It is a windows 98 PC and he only wants dial up connection.

-pick up your telephone and dial the number, is it engaged that way?
-when you make new connection try making the telephone a mobile that you know or another landline and try connecting to that. does the phone ring?

its more likely that its a modem issues rather than the fact it was a server in my opiniopn

Neil, thanks but I forgot to say that this had been tried - the modem phoned my landline successfully.

A total guess - are you trying to use 18866 with an ordinary number rather than 0845? I think they recognise some. If you have an 08089 or whatever for an anytime account ignore me.

No Andy, the "Make Network Connection" has an 0845 default number. He is trying to set up a brand new account. The 0845 number is supposed to search for a number of internet providers for him to choose from.

Have you checked your dialling rules? Also, as it's a new modem, you might need to check that the correct country settings have been selected.

I'll check the modem out for him, thanks, but I somehow think it is PC related rather than modem related. Maybe a reinstall of windows 98 might solve it.

First, check the IE settings. In IE, Tools, Internet Options, connections. Ensure that your new dial up connection is the one highlighted.

If there is an old connection, delete it.

You mean the Select from a list option, after you've avoided MSN a couple of times?

Don't know. There's always a chance that the number you're looking at for temporary connection is out of date; I've just seen an 0800 number.

Maybe you should choose provider first; when I first connected the CS (Claranet) talked me through the wizard.

Going round to try and sort it tonight; will try out your suggestions and hopefully tell you tomorrow I have sorted it! :)
