Need to come clean to tax credits

I've been a total idiot.

Can anyone on here advise me. I lied to tax credits and said I was single when I wasn't. Not an excuse but I found myself in a desperate situation. I want to admit to fraud to tax credits.

I read on HMRC website about a Contractual Disclosure Facility. Anyone on here from tax credits who can advise me further or has anyone went through this route?

My lie is making me ill with worry and the only way to get through this is to hold my hands up and take the consequences - although I don't know what they are.

Thanks.

You need to ring the tax credits helpline and give them the date that you moved in with your partner. They will then adjust the claim. You will of course have an overpayment to repay and you may be subject to penalties and further action.

You might be best to contact an advice agency like CAB to help you speak to HMRC and the best way to approach them.

Just tell them that you forgot to inform them, had a lot on etc..
Don't tell them you lied, then had a change of heart whatever you do, you will be a liar and a fraudster to them at that point and nothing will alter that.

    Don't tell them you lied?

Really? Are you condoning breaking the law here? Is fiddling just seen as a minor indiscretion these days?

I have to agree, if i didn't want to go down the CAB route and wanted to speak to them directly, I wouldn't be admitting to more than I had to right now, just say you made an error, give them the correct dates and see where it takes you - chances are as long as you are cooperative with the repayment it will not be taken further.

BUT if i was in your shoes right now, I would go to CAB and get some get some help.

Dont think I would use the words Lie, lied or fraud at any point if/when speaking to them.

How long are we talking about?

When you renewed this year, did you lie for a second time?

Or have you only claimed since April?

Not exactly in the same league as Jimmy Savilles "indiscretions" I suppose, but still against the law in anycase.
